KEY WORDS heat shock proteins; cytokines; heat shock factor t has become clear in recent years that, heat shock proteins (hsps) play a major role in the acute in-flammatory response and inflammatory diseases. 1,z Heat shock proteins were originally characterized as a highly conserved group of proteins involved in the response of cellular organisms to stresses such as heat shock. 3,4 These proteins appear to have acquired more specialized roles within the immune response in higher eukaryotes. Heat shock proteins released into the circulation from infectious. organisms or host cells can induce cytokine release from monocytes and provoke an immune response. In addition, induction of the heat shock response and the intracellular accumulation of hsps appears to play an anti-inflammatory role in monocytes and macrophages, reducing the expression of cytokines and other pro-inflammatory molecules. 6-11 Tran-scriptional activation of the heat shock response involves the induction of heat shock factor (HSF), a sequence-specific transcription factor that binds to heat shock elements (HSE) in the promoters of heat shock genes, le,13 Mammalian cells contain a structurally-related family of HSF genes, each of which binds to HSE. 13 Heat shock factor-1 (HSF1), the best characterized family member, is a constitutive protein expressed as a monomer in the cytoplasm that migrates to the nucleus when stressed, forms a homotrimer, and binds to the promoters of heat shock genes. 14,1s In this manuscript, we aim to explore mechanisms involved in tran-scriptional repression of cytokine genes by molecular components of the mammalian heat shock response including hsps and HSF1.

[Errors in the historiography of the Civic Hospital in Split: on the occasion of placing a memorial tablet on the former hospital building].

Although it primarily served as an institution for the care of the poor, its development shows the evolution of the public health care in this territory. Consequently, caring for this social stratum was taken over by two inadequate shelters and...

Cultures of engagement: The organizational foundations of advancing health in immigrant and low-income communities of color

A rich civic infrastructure of community-based organizations (CBOs) can help generate, diffuse and maintain a culture of engagement and health that benefits marginalized populations most at risk for illness, disability, and poor health. Attention to CBOs advances "meso-level" frameworks for understanding health cultures and outcomes by going beyond attention to social networks and social identi...

Cognitive-Motivational Determinants of Residents’ Civic Engagement and Health (Inequities) in the Context of Noise Action Planning: A Conceptual Model

The Environmental Noise Directive expects residents to be actively involved in localising and selecting noise abatement interventions during the noise action planning process. Its intervention impact is meant to be homogeneous across population groups. Against the background of social heterogeneity and environmental disparities, however, the impact of noise action planning on exposure to traffi...

From a philanthropic idea to building of civic hospital in Split in light of new archival evidence.

We investigated the circumstances of building of the Civic Hospital in Split in the light of new archival evidence. The study necessitated a thorough review of the older historiography and previously unpublished archival sources kept in the State Archives in Venice and Zadar. Civic journalism meets civic social science: foregrounding social determinants in health coverage

Many of the intricacies of health feature regularly in news reports depicting, medical practices, specific diseases, breakthroughs in treatment, and lifestyle-orientated interventions. Despite social scientists also demonstrating the importance of economic prosperity, community cohesion, stress, material hardship and stigma for health, such social determinants are often absent from health news....
